What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

The best gift I had was not wrapped, but came in the form of my then 22 month old son. We discovered when he was 16 months old that he was NOT a lazy baby, but that his hip wasn't fully developed. Dr's couldn't tell me why or if it would ever develop. But on Christmas day just after dinner, he pulled himself up to furniture for the first time and took his steps so gingerly. 22 months old to the day! Now at the ripe old age of 16 and 3/4, his gross motor skills are lagged by a few years but he walks, talks, and gets mostly A's in school. What a special gift he was and is!

My husband gave me a certificate from the Sheldrick Wildlife Foundation as a co-sponsor of a baby African elephant called Dida. My sponsorship along with many others provides special milk formulas & 24 hr care for these orphaned babies so they can be rehabiliated and re-established in the wild with other elephant herds. Most of these orphans have lost their mothers to poachers and to snare traps. It was the most thoughtful not romantic gift i have ever received.

The best gift ever was my nephew sleeper, all worn and dirty, he gave it to me in a visit to my brother, and he told me: "here ant, for the days you want to think of me". He was 6 years old, I cried, there is no way that I would ever trow that away. Venus.

Tickets to see Cinderella. I know it is silly, but I never would have bought them for myself and I was completely impressed with my oaf of a boyfriend at figuring out how to get them and where the best seats would be. It was amazing.

My best gift ever recieved was from christmas of '07. It was the last gift I would ever get from my uncle beins he passed away April 13 of '08. I didn't get the christmas present until May 11th of '08 though. It was a paint-by-number of a kitten hanging by a rope. It looked like the kitten was doing pull-ups. The title of the painting is called, "Hang in there."

One best gift I ever received from my husband was a WHOLE DAY to myself without the kids. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2 boys....but from morning to evening, I relished in complete silence. Yes, even disconnected the phone....ok my cell phone was on vibrate. I did no housework...just enjoyed my day off by reading a novel.

I don't have a best present but I do have a question. I hope y'all will be patient with me. One of the chatter's name is somewhat familiar. I had a friend many years ago that I lost touch with. Her name was Deondrea as well. I knew her in North Carolina.

A pug is a terrific gift!

Lately, I've been buying a pretty cool thing for my city-dwelling friends: Printed city maps from the Department of Transportation. Usually you can print archived maps dating back to the 1800's in any size you want - they're around $50 for each print, but can take up an entire wall of your friend's house. Plus, if you order them with lamination, they are perfect for planning out runs through a city, marking important locations, etc.
