What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

My gift receiving high point was when I was blessed with 3 (foster) children near the Christmas holidays. I welcomed them into my home as if they were my own. My family also welcomed them with open arms. They met my parents, grandparents, and traveled up North. They received one of the best Christmas they've ever had. Every home we visited, they were given gifts. The school also gave them gifts. It was just so beautiful to see their eyes light up with joy during the Christmas holidays, even though they were in a stranger's home.

After a grueling five-day trek on the famed Inca Trail in Peru, my feet ached and my toenails were actually beginning to fall off (ew, I know!) The surrounding scenery was amazing, but I was miserable. So my fiance "ponied up" $18 to rent me a horse to ride partway up the mountain. When we finally reached the summit (him on foot!), I told him on the spot that it was the best gift that I had every received!

My very favorite Christmas gift was from my Mom aka Santa. I was 7 years old, it was 1962, and I wanted a Barbie and a bunch of Barbie clothes soo bad because all my friends had them. She was a single Mom and I also had a brother. I had other dolls but my "friends" wouldn't let me play because mine wasn't a real Barbie. My Mom worked nights as a nurse and a friends daughter had all the Barbie clothes, so she brought them to work and my wonderful mother bought material and cut a pattern of each outfit. During quiet times at work she hand sewed every one of those outfits. I not only got my Barbie but I got ALL her clothes too, and they looked just like the "store bought" ones. I found out later in life that it took my Mom months and months to do all that sewing. I still have that Barbie and I'll never let it go. I lost my Mom in 2000. I've put that Barbie under my tree every year since, and when I'm asked why it's there I tell the story.

My two adopted daughters. The older one was abandoned by her birth mother and the younger one's birth mother was mentally ill.

The best gift I ever received was a new kidney. My donor was from California and died in childbirth at age 34. They were able to save her baby before she died. I am blessed that a family chose to give me the gift of life when they were in such pain. I try my best to live each day in a way that honors my donor and her family. I keep them in my heart and send prayers their way each day.

Hmmm, well my favorite gift memory is this: I was 5 and my brother was 4. When we got back from shopping, our mother said "Don't tell your Dad what we got him today. We want it to be a surprise for his birthday." A few hours later when he got home, we ran up to great him. My brother shouted "Daddy! We didn't get you a shirt today! And it's not brown!"

The best gift i received was a plane ticket to go back home to visit, it was from my whole family! Everyone chipped in so i wouldn't have to spend Christmas all by myself. I was a student at the time in NC and im from NM so i have no family here at all. That was the best gift i received because family means the world to me!
