What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

My best gift was a little silver dolphin figurine with a blue crystal ball on top. It was a gift from my mom before I went to college. And even though it wasn't the most expensive present I've gotten, it's still my favorite. And I still have it and display it proudly.

The best gift was getting to hold my granddaughter. She was very ill on a respirator in a sadated coma. She was two months old. She was born early but, sent home at a week old. She developed a cold that quickly ended up to be RSV viris. Within 24 hours after being admitted she was intubated and flown to Mass General in Boston. She progressively got worse and developed Acute respiratory distress syndrome or ARDS. I knew she was in for a long fight. five years earlier I was also on deaths door. I also had ARDS a silent killer. I was in a coma for eight weeks. The struggle I went through to recover was nothing compared to watching my first grandchild fight for her life or seeing the look on my daughters face and feeling her pain. The pain was so great that just writing this brings tears to my eyes.
On christmas eve she seemed to have turned a corner and we were able to hold her on Christmas. Unfortunately her struggles were not over.
But, after five months she went. She is now five
The best gift that I ever recieved was my pregnancy test being positive. I wrapped up the positive test with a note to my husband saying "daddy, I can't wait to meet you". I will never forget his face, it was the best gift I have ever given.

The best gift I have ever received was my piano. It isn't very grand, and it isn't exactly in tune, but it is special to me. I love to play piano and sing, but after I got married four years ago, I didn't have access to a piano hardly at all. It was torture for me. Since I started learning when I was nine, I have used the piano as an outlet for all my emotions. If I was happy, sad, angry, or whatever I would go and play it on the piano. Not being able to do that was horrible. Last year my parents and my husbands parents both chipped in some money and I was able to find an old, used piano. It is heaven to have music back in my life regularly.

The best gift I ever received was a locket from my husband. Inside he had put a picture of each of my children on each side. I wear the locket just about every day so that my children are close to me even when they are not physically with me.

My greatest gift was in l955. My husband came home from over seas during the Korean Conflict. He had been gone 2 years. My husband, our son, and I had one of the most wonderful Christmases anyone could have. Oh, we've now been married 56 years. It just gets better. Sarah Womack

I've been working all year buying old children's books for my Mother to replace a collection that was lost in Hurricane Katrina. I think it will be the best gift ever for her.

The best gift I ever received on Christmas was from my husband. I had told him my story about never getting a new bike for Christmas. Growing up my family never had any money so all of our gifts were 2nd hand. I didn't realize that until I was older. Every year I would ask for a new bike, I received 1 that my brother had made for me. It wasn't new but it was a bike. That year my husband said that I was going to have the best Christmas ever. I woke up that Christmas morning and there was a brand new bike under the tree. The best gift wasn't the bike but his thoughtfulness.

The best gift I ever gotten was last Christmas. My Mom made each of her kids a scrapbook and on every page with every picture, she added her own little comments about what the picture was and how she felt when it was taken. She also bought each of us a book to go with the scrapbook. The books were so cute, even though they were made for little children. She made all of us cry! It was the most memorable gift ever. I hope one day I am able to give my kids something so meaningful.
