What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

Trip To see my family

The best gift I ever received was 2 years ago on Christmas. My husband did a Christmas past for me from the age 6-15 the time that I spent in a children's home. I opened gifts that related back to those years as a child. It was a very emotional day for me and my family.

A year before my 46 year old mother-in-law passed away she made my daughter and I sweaters. Being the ungrateful brat I tended to be then, I got rid of it without a second thought because it didn't "fit right". She passed away a few weeks before the next Christmas and I never got another Christmas gift from her again. I regretted getting rid of that purple soft sweater, I found the yarn she'd used and knitted myself (and my own mother) a soft purple scarf. The gift my mother-in-law gave me was a life lesson... she taught me to never take the people in your life for granted... and that someday you may wish you'd kept that strange gift someone gave you because it may be all that you have left. I never take a moment for granted now and I'm not the ungrateful brat I once was. That's just something that can't be bought.

The best gift I ever got was a brand new SUV from my husband. I always drove beater vehicles and dreamed about having a brand spanking new vehicle. It was also in my favorite color, purple. I loved that Dodge Durango and will never forget it.

Christmas came three months after my husband died. I was sick with grief and did not know how I would get through the day. Christmas morning, I awoke to find a wispy white feather on my night table and as I sat up to get out of bed, a little card like they send with flowers was on the floor. It read "All my love" and it was in my husband's handwriting. Now a practical mind would say the feather came from my down pillow and the card fell off the table. But I prefer to believe that it was a message from my husband orchestrated by an angel.
The birth of our first child!!!

A sewing machine with all the bells and whistles of the time. Actually, it was more the thought that my husband realized how much it would mean to me, rather than the machine itself. Over the following years, I literally wore it out!

Not to sound corny, but the best gift that I ever received is my husband. I was married a number of years ago, to the most horrible man and after having a disasterous marriage, I had finally got up the nerve to divorce. Thereafter, I did not want any serious relationships and planned to never marry again. Then along came my husband. I had gotten very ill a month after meeting him and was in and out of the hospital for weeks and he was there for me constantly. Twelve years and 2 kids later, he's still here for me. I really believe my husband is the best gift that I've ever received.
