What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

The best gift I ever received was an early Christmas present from my father. We had moved from NYC to Los Angeles, just 6 months earlier. I was missing my dearly loved Uncle Harry very so greatly. He was a writer & just the kind of uncle a child could want. He knew just about everything & could do anything. I was in the fourth grade & one afternoon I came home from school & there sitting in the living room was Uncle Harry. A well of emotion I never had know then or since, came over me. I wept, smile & jumped on him all in the same moment. I remember looking at my familie's faces & they were stunned to see my reaction. They too smiled, as I had never seen them with smiles quite like that. My most wonderful father, had moved Uncle Harry 3000 miles, to come & live in Los Angeles & give me the best gift ever.

When my kids were 4 and 2, respectively, my husband took them to have their picture taken. He then had this picture placed on a plaque stating "We Love Our Mom." I had never cried over a present -- until I received this one!

My husband and kids gave me an afghan from my favorite resort, Disney's Old Key West Resort in Orlando. The second I saw it, I burst into tears, because every memory I have of the resort is a great one.

Fourteen years ago, I received the cutest Jack Russell Terrier, Max. Recently, he passed away...but every Christmas, I remember him ripping up presents and it brings me joy :)

One Christmas, my cousin had two gorgeous hat boxes under the tree for me. rather than taking her mother-in-law's vintage hats to a second hand store, she had gathered them all up for me. (I LOVE hats.) There were 8 of them - from the 30's and 40's - all individually wrapped in colorful tissue paper. I remember it was so fun reaching in to discover the next snazzy number. I still have the hats and while I don't wear them as much, I treasure them and am already plotting to pass them on to a dear, lucky one in the same ritual. Not yet though! Thank you to my sweet cousin, Deb!

My boyfriend rearranged the letters in our names to spell out 'so darling angel' then he went back to a flea market we had visited together and bought these cool vintage typewriter keys I had liked so much. He used the keys to spell out his clever anagram and glued them onto a frame with a picture of us inside. So thoughtful and crafty!

The best gift I've ever given was the Gift of LIFE! Having my daughter was by far the BEST gift I could have ever given myself and the world!!!... I know, like a Mom usually would, I speak of my daughter, quite often! But I TRULY believe that she has something so BRILLIANTLY unique, 'til I just can't wait to see what God has for her to give to the world!!!... It's just sooooo comforting to know that I have a SEED that is going to one day BLOSSOM into a BEAUTIFUL flower! And, giving me my FLOWER while I still LIVE is the most EXTRAORDINARY gift of them ALL!!!!...

At a time when my husband and I were really broke (two jobs and college...grocery shopping with calculator), a friend of us gave us a simple but tasteful picnic basket –candles, wine, cheeses, and other goodies. It was very special, at that time, to be able to take a break, go to the beach and have a romantic picnic without spending any money.
