What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

I gave my sister a scrapbook filled with our old family pictures. I also had my mom and dad write some of their personal memories of some of the pictures. My sister had tears in her eyes when she opened it. It was a good feeling to know someone really appreciated a present I gave them.

The best gift I ever received was a letter from my son in 2006. He was on one side of the country, and I was on the other. Even though he was a young man now, Christmas was not the same without him there. That heartfelt letter describing how much he missed me and talking all about past Christmases we had as a family was the greatest gift ever. Gifts do not have to cost money to be appreciated. I will treasure that special gift as long as I live.
Haven't seen or heard from someone in a while and miss them this year? Write them a letter!

There was an elderly couple who lived down the street from me. They were a very friendly couple who always told me jokes on my walks in the evenings. Then one day he suddlenly passed away, and his wife was left with bills and funeral costs. Her utilities got shut off and she was unable to get them back on and she had no family at all, and everyone around ignored the fact that she was using candles and blankets. So I had them reconnected and left a card on her door. The next day she was at my door crying with a pie and note that said I must be her Guardian Angel and that was the best gift I ever gave and received...

The best gift I've ever received was in December 2006, from my boyfriend at the time. He took me to see my favorite band in the world play a few days after Christmas, then waited outside in the cold with me for 45 minutes so I could meet the singer, who is my idol.

The best gift I ever received was my 2000 Electric Green Mustang Covertible that my husband surprised me with for Christmas in 1999.
My best present, ever, was my daughter who was born a few days after Christmas. That was the best Christmas I ever had.

All the other girls at school had long been wearing makeup, but my mother wouldn't allow me to wear a speck. She said I was too young. I was mortified amongst my peers with my plain, clean face.

Then, on Christmas morning, I unwrapped a deceptively large box with a tempting rattle to it when shaken. As the lid came off, I nearly fainted. Inside were lipsticks, pencils, mascara and all sorts of cosmetic treasures. And across the room was my mother with tears in her eyes because instead of dolls and skates, this year she was giving her baby a "grown-up" gift.

It was Devin's first birthday party, and I had already been giving him some wonderful things you can easily get to make noises, animal sounds, and bird chirps. His Mother already seemed a little ding-dongy with the racket from her son and the other little kids. So, as his very proud Godfather -he's my first son of any kind- I thought about what would be the best gift I could give this little boy.

I decided on some United States Coins, and explained to the 30-or-so party guests that the set of all the President Eisenhower Silver Dollars means more to me now, since my father served in World War II. But as Devin gets older, if I'm not around, his Mother will give them to him with a little story of history, of people who fought so he could grow up free, and of someone who loved him very much.
