What’s the Best Gift You’ve Ever Given or Received?

By: Jacinta O’Halloran (View Profile)

As I pulled the slender box from under the tree, my mind raced with possibilities. Ripping the paper away, I found a small box of coloring pencils. “Huh?” The attached note read “you fill my life with color, now go fill yours,” and it included a certificate to a local art class, something I’d been feeling too busy to sign up for myself. I burst into tears. What’s your gift giving—or receiving—high point?

The giveaway ended Dec 17th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways soon and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

At my age I've receive many wonderful gifts. When my son was about 8 years old he saved his allowance and bought me a lighted makeup mirror for Mother's Day. How many 8 year olds will give up their allowance!!
For practical purposes I love the remote car start my daughter got for me 2 years ago. It helps me face the ice and snow of winter a little easier.

The best gift I ever gave was a wine making kit to my father upon his retirement. I knew he would need a hobby to keep him busy. Like everything in life, he took on wine making with great passion - actually researching starting his own vineyard the year before he died.

He loved that wine making kit, because to him, every batch was a new great creation he could call his own. He died with a batch of white and a batch of red in their final stages of fermentation. My mom bottled up the batches and gave me and my siblings bottles of each.

I will never drink these bottles of wine, because to me, I have the spirit of my father captured in those bottles of wine with me in my house every day.

I've read a lot of the responses here and the original post, and I'm afraid I don't have anything so moving! The best gift I can remember giving (at least in terms of how happy the giftee was about it) is a sweater to my brother. Sounds dumb, right? I guess he finds himself difficult to fit--sleeves are never long enough for him/his taste--and I stumbled upon a Perfect Sweater. Who knew?

Several years ago, my husband took silent note of the wreck I was turning myself into for the holidays. We have two autistic children, and preparing for the holidays in addition to my already hectic so-called “normal” day was taking a toll. As his job was requiring late hours and weekends due to the holidays, I did all of the shopping and decorating, along with the extra baking and required candy making. The children were at the expected frantic level of excitement. By Christmas Eve, I was exhausted. After the children were finally in bed and presents deposited under the tree, my husband told me to go on to bed. I quickly fell asleep, while he stayed up. When I got up in the morning, it was to the best Christmas present I had ever received. He stayed up late into the night and cleaned the whole house! When I later told my brother (then a bachelor), he said that he couldn’t imagine ever loving someone that much!
My best gift I ever received was the engagement ring from my husband

My favorite material gift was a laptop from my husband. Unfortunately, he threw it out the third story window 6 months later when he got mad at me. I no longer have a laptop...or a husband ;)
