Liz Smith’s Advice to Those About to Marry: Don’t! Here’s Why ...

By: wowOwow (View Profile)

During a recent conversation with the wOw women on weddings, Liz Smith gave the following advice to those about to marry:

“Don’t. Take the money. Take the money and buy yourself a fabulous apartment and don’t spend the money on the wedding. It is the biggest throwaway and means nothing later. It’s the biggest waste of money and effort that I’ve ever heard of. It’s like a big party where you just blow everything out; you have nothing left. It’s got to cost $30,000.”

But Mary Wells had a different view:

“You women really amaze me. I mean, I’ve seen maybe thirty weddings and everybody’s as happy as they can be and the brides are beautiful and they’re sweet and I’m sure there are some of these things that you’re talking about. But there are an awful lot of people who have pretty weddings.”

I agree with Liz. Life is expensive. For most couples, funding a wedding can be a hardship on themselves or their family. The money is better spent on beginning the life they plan together. Setting up a home or having money available for needs expected or not. This takes a lot of stress off the new couple and provide a smoother move forward. I have attended many wedding that are stress buckets for the bride and family. Viewing a few TV reality bride programs will confirm this. A creative person can provide a memorable wedding without breaking the bank.
