Mediterranean Mussels: Sweet, Summer Peaches of the Sea

By: Patricia Kositzky (View Profile)

He’s not kidding. I lifted the lid on the pot of mussels steaming on the grill, and was enveloped in a fragrant fog of white wine and thyme. Most had popped open and were simmering gently, ready to be relished. Everyone eagerly dug into bowls piled with glistening black shells, baby tomatoes, and garlicky broth. Guests greedily fished fingers around for the choicest mussels, and broke off chunks of crusty, grilled baguette, sopping them through the juice. “These are some of the best mussels I have ever had,” insisted a mussel-savvy girlfriend. “Nice and big, very flavorful and tender.”

Indeed. My husband moaned in agreement and polished off several pounds himself.

Enjoy the delicious “Peaches of the Sea” with a Pacific Northwest pinot gris. Oregon’s slightly fruity and crisp King Estate 2006 is a wonderful compliment. To get mussels shipped fresh to your door, contact Taylor Shellfish Farm.
