Going Green When You Clean

Barb from Indianapolis shares her do-it-yourself, environmentally friendly spring-cleaning tips. She writes:

“I am amazed at all the cleaning supplies and solutions that are available today and while they can be convenient, they can also be expensive. If you’re looking to save a little money, or you’ve just run out of cleaner and need a quick substitute, here are some tried and true everyday pantry items that can do the trick. They’re also great for the environment!

White vinegar: Mix it with equal parts water to clean everything from countertops to appliances to bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. (Don’t worry; the smell will dissipate once it’s dry.) It even works as a fabric softener—simply add 1/2 cup to your washer’s rinse cycle.

Baking soda: Use it with water to scrub surfaces like counters, sinks, and tubs (works great on stainless steel). Sprinkle some on your carpet overnight to absorb odors, and then vacuum.

Lemons: Put a peel into the disposal and your kitchen will smell lemon-fresh. Or mix with olive oil to create a natural wood polish.
