“Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house we go; the horse knows the way to travel the sleigh in the white and drifting snow.” Brings back memories, doesn’t it? If you do remember, then you’re showing your age like me. We always sang that one in school right along with “We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing, He chastens and hastens His will to make known.”
Oh, those were the good old days, weren’t they? As little children in the ’50s and ’60s, our dreams and aspirations seemed like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” But, they were our dreams, our hopes, and our little secret desires.
There’s another dream we all have as Christians and it’s really more of a hope—“the blessed hope.” That’s the day when our Lord Jesus comes back for His own and takes us to be with Him in those mansions He’s prepared for just for us. After thirty-plus years as a believer, oh how I long for that day.
Now, it’s not that I don’t love my life here or that I’m not appreciative of what the Lord has given me. I have my precious family, friends, and ministry. It’s just that as the days go on, He looks sweeter and sweeter to me.
And that’s the way it should be, shouldn’t it? I remember a song I learned as a young Christian and it was called, “Eternity’s Values in View.” I didn’t quite know what that meant, but now I see it’s that we should live every moment, every hour, and every day with the hope and expectation of what eternity will hold for us. He tells us, “Lay not up yourselves treasures upon earth but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:19a,20a,21a KJV
Oh, dear ones, we have so much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. If you know the Lord Jesus as your Savior, then you have the “abundant life” here and the “blessed hope” of heaven to come. Let us rejoice and praise Him, for He indeed is worthy of all our praise.
