I was brushing my teeth this morning getting ready for the day and it dawned on me that prayer or meditation needs to be a daily habit, not a ho-hum routine but an intentional routine in my day.
My daily habit of prayer begins in the morning where I sit in a chair and pray or meditate in silence for a while, then read while sipping a cup of tea, and finally spend time writing in my journal. This habit of prayer really helps me stay focused and attentive to the Spirit throughout the day. When there are days that I am unable to pray in the morning, I feel out-of-sorts or off-center.
What is your habit of prayer or meditation?
Here are some suggestions to tend to your soul this week: (Use what is helpful and ignore the rest.)
Find the time of day that works best for you to pray or meditate. It is important for the time to be as consistent as possible in order for the prayer to become a daily habit.
Remember that your time of prayer does not have to be long. If you are new to praying, taking a few minutes of prayer each day is a good start. For example, set a timer to three minutes and sit quietly in the silence during that time. Three minutes of silence can feel like an eternity sometime. If you feel you are stuck or in a rut with your prayer time, explore different patterns or try something new with your prayer.
Be mindful of your attitude toward prayer. It is important not to think of prayer as a daily chore or something you have to do, but more of a desire to connect with God or the Spirit throughout the day. Having an attitude of intentional desire is key.
Find what works for you and cultivate this time of prayer so it becomes part of your daily habits.
