For the Love of Lip Gloss

Lips are made for love. They are the vessels for kissing. The instruments for whispering sweet nothings. The parcels for puckering and pouting. Being such an important part of the body, a lady must not only take care of them, but adore and adorn them with delights. I’m not talking glitter and lights. Rather gloss and lacquer. And I will go on the record right now as saying that when it comes to the lips, there is no price too high to make them luscious.

For the longest time, I lived solely on Blistex Herbal Answer and a spot of whatever $5 lip gloss du jour I found at the local drugstore. I’ll admit it, I was (and still am) addicted to gloss. At any given time I’d have five or six floating around in my handbag. You never know what hint of color you might need to throw on. I’ll tell you what I wasn’t addicted to, however—paying over $20 for lip gloss. I drew a line in the sand when it came to handing over more than a Jackson for lip gloss. Sure, I had read about the many new technologies in lip gloss and lipstick and had seen commercials with supermodels pouting their plump lips, but after checking out the small type, my lips instantly chapped with sticker shock. As time has passed and I’ve fallen head-over-heels in love with Sephora and cosmetic counters in general, it’s been hard for me to stick to my $20 rule. I kept asking myself, “Why should I pay more for something that’s basically a step above lip balm?” But cosmetic companies make it hard with their gloss that stays put for hours, fills in the creases in your lips, contains a rainbow of fruit flavors, and arms you with the power to attract men from twenty feet off.

And then, one fateful night having drinks with a girlfriend, I fell victim to Pout Plump. Maybe it was the adorable tube decorated with a frame of black lace. Or maybe it was the incredible minty sensation I felt when applying it, like licking a candy cane on a cold winter’s day. Whatever it was, I was hooked. The next morning I awoke with a jolt and made a beeline for Sephora. There was no question what I had to do.
