What’s Your Green Beauty Routine?

When you squeeze that shampoo in the morning or apply the face cream at night, do you ever think about what’s behind the product you are using? Do you know if your soap was tested on animals or whether your lotion’s essential oils are sourced from organic farms? Do your products have artificial colors or nasty chemicals in them? Have you ever thought about whether that conditioner bottle is recyclable?

Green philosophy is not just about cars and food, there are green solutions for every beauty product you can think of. Do you know of a good soap with biodegradable packaging? Are there natural oils and lotions that are cruelty free? What’s your favorite green facial cleaner?

The best products that I have tried that are in packaging that's recycled and 100% natural is the Grassroots products at Kohl's department stores. Not only are they wonderful products, they have products for the entire family and pets. The other wonderful thing is that they are affordable and not out landishly priced as some of the other products on the market.

I discovered the best exfoliator at the Kabuki Bath House in Japan. It's so easy, I can't believe I hadn't thought of it before! In a small container, simply mix table salt and body lotion. I usually lather up and rinse, turn the water off while I scrub, and rinse. My skin is so soft afterwards!

I've been using Aveda products for a few years now and I'm so relieved that the earth and its animals don't have to suffer for my frizz-free hair. Aveda uses ingredients that originate from renewable, sustainable, or organic plant-based sources. (And they smell good too!) I'm also a fan of all natural Burt's Bees lip balm by day and Urban Decay's cruelty-free vegan eyeshadows and lipsticks by night.

To me, the best green beauty routine is to go without makeup, creams and goops whenever possible. Water is a great beauty product. I do use castille soap and the occasional lotion for dry skin and of course an earth-friendly shampoo. But I don't put much stock in anti-aging products or other promised miracles. I think it's mostly marketing. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I'm very interested in making my own face masks with oatmeal, olive oil, avacado, lavender oil etc.

I'm ashamed to say I'm just now developing a green beauty routine. I've researched the products I'm using and just found out that my makeup brand (Dermalogica) is NOT tested on animals and all of the packaging is recyclable. Whew. I'm also ashamed to say that I've not been recycling the containers, but will do from now on. (but I have recycled the packaging). Mac gives you a free lipstick when you bring back 6 containers for them to recycle.
