Father’s Day: Scents and Scentsibilities

By: Violet Devereaux (View Profile)

Cologne, golf balls, and ties are the old reliables when it comes to Father’s Day gifts, but instead of going with the old standbys, why not choose a fragrance that speaks to or represents the man you love? There are so many beautiful fragrances to choose from so there is no excuse to give dad a cologne that smells like mothballs (unless he does actually remind you of mothballs!). When choosing a fragrance, ask yourself: Is he elegant or woodsy? Spicy or citrusy? Then be creative in your selection. Start your research with the following five—they run the taste and price gamut, and come highly recommended by men themselves.

Acqua Di Gio
Marine and citrus notes, with a dash of herbs. Armani at his elegant seaside best.

Curve by Liz Claiborne
Refreshing and spicy, with a hint of lavender and amber. Widely available, including many drugstores and Wal-Mart. It gets compliments and won’t break the bank.

Equipage by Hermes
Spicy and woody, a classic since its 1970 release.

Pour Monsieur by Chanel
Because every man needs some Chanel—and it’s one of the greats.

Tom Ford for Men
Classic men’s cologne with citrus, pepper, and leather notes. My scent double’s boyfriend loves it, saying panties fly when you enter the room wearing it. There you are.

For the old man in your life, keep it simple ... get him classic Old Spice Aftershave or Pinaud's Bay Rum after splash, just like he can get after a shave and haircut at the barbershop. Yeah, I know! I'm an old timer who still goes to a Union Barber. Old habits die hard!

A birdie told me that the panty-flying is true for the Tom Ford lovers. So, if your BF wears it, don't buy it for your pops. (Unless of course mama needs some action.) Okay, I apologize, unnecessary information. Either way, its a gorgeous, intriguing scent, my favorite! Thank you Violet, you're truly brilliant.

Ok here's what I like about this review. I wish I had something like this when I had to choose for my father and uncle. It's informative and very descriptive. I would go to the counter and sniff them all and then some. I especialy like the Tom Ford for Men. That should go to the top of the list.
