Black Friday 2008: Prepare for Battle

By: Dahlia Rideout (View Profile)

It’s not often new national holidays are created, especially around something as superficial as shopping. But leave it to American ingenuity to create the phenomenon of Black Friday.

Considered the busiest shopping day of the year, Black Friday falls on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Most stores open early, anywhere from midnight to 5 am, and attract shoppers with door busters and loss leaders.

The trend is now catching on online, with the addition of Cyber Monday, the Monday after Black Friday. Attempting to gain the same shopping fury as Black Friday, Cyber Monday may offer some relief to those who’d rather not get stampeded trying to find a deal.

Happy Black Friday 2008, everyone!

there is a lot of furor over retail outlets instructing their employees to say "happy holidays" instead of Merry Christmas. "Leave the Christ in Christmas" is the rallying cry. I say, PLEASE leave my Lord's name OFF of this season altogether. I celebrate His birth, and am happy to give gifts and receive them, but would much rather call it Happy Holidays than anything that implies Jesus Christ is part of this ugly behavior. Makes me sad and angry. I will say Happy Holidays abroad, and Merry Christmas to my family and friends who are Christians.

I may be wrong (have been many times...) It's my opinion Police should slow the cameras down a bit and do their zoom in and hold some people responsible for killing the employee at Wal Mart on Black Friday. http://gawker.com/5099813/wal+mart‐employee‐killed‐in‐black‐friday‐shopping‐stampede It is very sad to know how people behave in times such as Holiday sales. Why hold the stores responsible? So many want to point fingers and blame Wal Mart when it was the people doing all the running in. That would be like holding the Gun Shop responsible for selling a gun to someone that went out and used it to commit a crime. It makes no sense to me. I hope all those people got everything they wanted and while they are sitting at home opening presents and enjoying their family, someone is missing their loved one today at Christmas. My prayers are with the ones that got hurt and the one that got killed and their families.
