It’s clear that women, according to the Center for Women’s Business Research, are starting new and home businesses, which are succeeding and profiting; at a faster rate than men. On the other hand, many other women won’t get beyond the “I’m thinking about it” stage. Since caring and well meaning friends and loving family will stop them.
How can this happen you ask?
It’s easy. Her family and friends weren’t behind her. In short, they were concerned about her risk taking. And began the process of talking her out of it. Because they have her “best interests at heart.”
Without hearing pleas and stories from women who tell me such stories of concerned family and friends. Whether it’s the rational “You need your paycheck” to “What are you thinking?” I’ve heard it all.
How can you avoid this and get your family and friends firmly behind you as you get into the serious planning stages of starting up your own business?
Here’s four ways to help insure they get on board with you:
1. Gather them together to discuss your plans.
This is very important. Once you gather them, then provide the basic (yet understandable) facts about your new business, it helps break the ice. And usually begins to clear the air. Plus lets them know you’re not involved in any risky or questionable schemes or scenarios.
It also gives you the opportunity to lay out a simple business plan. And doing this, not only shows how well how thought out and organized your plans are. It allows them to review, first hand, what they actually are. This allows them to get a better sense of what you’re planning, how you’ll go about, and what they can expect.
