Black Gold: Wake up and Smell the Coffee

By: Lena Vazifdar (View Profile)

Buying fair trade products is an “easy” choice in many respects—easy to dismiss since it doesn’t affect us first hand, yet at the same time, easy to purchase and easy to realize that it is a pressing issue in need of deliberation. This seemingly “easy” decision can make a lifetime of difference for international farmers and workers toiling away in fields in order to live and put food on the table. If for one minute we would contemplate the ramifications of our decisions, then we would be on our way to helping thousands of people, rather than merely helping ourselves. Black Gold is an inspiring and enormously important documentary that compels us to face the reality behind our daily decisions, and the truth of the very profound responsibility we all have as consumers and inhabitants on this earth.

Black Gold will air on ITVS Independent Lens on April 10th.

Very interesting and informative. Now I will think twice before buying my daily caffeinated beverage.

Lena, great encapsulation of the movie and the issue. Fair Trade for life!
