What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

I went to my first concert on a school night and got home REALLY late. My mom actually let me sleep in and skip school the next day - she was so awesome!

I couldn't believe how long the line was for the woman's restroom!! I remember thinking that it was so unfair!

The first concert that I ever remember seeing was Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. My parents dragged myself and my sister to see it. Neither one of us really wanted to go because as pre-teen you didn't want to be with your parents doing something or even admit that you would be going to something that was country music. After we got to our seats all I really remember about the whole thing is the boys that were sitting in the seats next to us. Needless to say through the whole thing we were paying more attention to them than we were the concert.

My first concert was REO Speedwagon and I went with my cousins. I was so excited and it was a wonderful concert! We were about 15 or so, and the only way we could go was to promise we would get up for school the next day without giving our mothers any problems. That, in itself, was a problem because the concert was about a two hour drive from home, so we got back really late. We did go to school the next day too - even if we felt like zombies!

I was a very little girl and my Mom, and Dad took me to see a country and wesrtern star. It was the Earnest Tubb concert. He was very poppular back then. I had never experienced any thing like that. I was very excited. I will never forget my first concert.

The first concert I loved was Savage Garden. I dragged a good friend with me who bought a glow stick but then gave it to me. I was so excited when the singer, Darren Hayes, looked my direction I swung my arms all over and smacked myself in the head with that darn glowstick. I then started rubbing my head with the hand still holding the glow stick. I think the singer saw me because he kinda started to laugh and quickly turned away.

My family is originally from MS. I have lived in New Orleans for 50 yrs. My cousin, Barb, told me that JAMES BROWN was going to be performing at an all black high school in Jackson,MS. My parents said I could go spend the weekend with my cousin. We were both 15 yrs. old in 1963, we weren't even allowed to date at this time. We had arranged for some guys we knew, that were older and had a car to take us the high school that night. We had agreed to pay for them to get into the high school gym. We had told my aunt & uncle we would be home by 10:30pm. We said we were going to see some friends. Little did we know, I was the only blonde there and James Brown made a comment about my hair when he finally came on the stage at 1:00AM!!! He sang for over 2 hours!!! We didn't get home until 4:00AM!!!! We got caught sneaking in. BIG TROUBLE!!! We were punished for months! But, every time I heard a JAMES BROWN song, I could still see him singing, sweating, moving and dancing! It was so worth it.

I went to see the Monkees on their comeback tour. It was 1986, and I was with a much older guy. I loved the concert experience, but the music was not that great.
