What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

The giveaway ended June 27th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

Went to a Johnny Cash concert at Misissippi State in 1963, as I recall he played until sunrise and then he got thrown in jail in Starkville for walking around in a zombie state. He later wrote and recorded a song about that night. Most modern concerts are over by 11 PM. His was the best I ever saw!!!

It was August of 1983 and a very hot day in Philadelphia--over 100 degrees. We went to the old JFK stadium (no longer there) and it was a multi-act concert--Madness, REM, Joan Jett, and The Police. The people next to us let us look through their binoculars, offered us a toke of their joints (we politely refused), I got to see a frontal moon and other obscene gestures I had never seen before. It was great!

We went to a Stevie Wonder concert in 1980. He puts on an fantastic concert, surrounded by keyboards he bounces from one to another without missing a note, while singing at the same time. Pretty amazing when you consider that he can't see the instruments he's playing.

Summer in New Orleans can be murderously hot, not the best time to attend an outdoor concert. Nevertheless, when my friend Mike asked me to join him and some other friends at a concert at the old Sugar Bowl stadium, I jumped at the chance. Never mind that I knew little about the middle act, ZZ Top, and wasn't exactly a fan of the headliner, Aerosmith. It was 1975, I was 17 and I was going through my Journey-Fleetwood Mac phase, wasn't too interested in Texas and Boston bands. Any way, we got there in time to catch the last song by the opening band, a forgettable foursome, and find one of the last remaining spots of grass on the floor of the stadium. We sat in front of a '60s holdover who rolled joint after joint, passing one to us occasionally. He sat with a bag in his lap that held a joint the size of a large bratwurst. I asked him what he was saving it for, and he said, "Aerosmith, man." I knew it was going to be an interesting and educational evening.

I don't remember the year, but I know it was in the late 90's, my sister and I were obsessed with NSync like most young adult girls. For Christmas my parents always gave us one big present, well this year it came in an envelope, we counted to 3 and opened them revealing 3 tickets to the NSync concert in the summer. I was so excited! I looked over to my younger brother who looked pissed! haha. Lets just say he wasn't a fan. My brother sister and I had never been to a concert, and even though we were in the lawn in the back our rumps drenched because the wet grass had soaked through the blanket, we had a life alternating experience (at that time) we got t-shirts! Haha it was wonderful. We were so moved by the live performance.

I was 16 and my mother had saved up enough money to take us to Universal Studios in Florida. It was quite a day and I ended up wondering off away from my family and they were worried sick. Well after crying and apolozing several times we were about to leave when we heard that Jefferson Airplane was going to perform. Well I am a huge fan and so was my family and when that band took the stage and started singing "Somebody to Love" it was the happiest moment of my teenage years. Sadly that was the only concert I ever got to see but a memory that will always be with me.

In the eighth grade a friend's mom had bought a bunch of tickets to see Aerosmith opened by Skid Row. My one girlfriend and got ready that afternoon by listening to the new Aerosmith tape (pumped) over and over and over and over. We had memorized almost every song by concert time. I will never forget it! And I am still good friends with my duet partner 20 years later and 320 miles in between!

Way back in the sixth grade, I went with two friends to see Paul Revere and the Raiders. There were other groups but I don't remember their names. After the concert, I got lost in the crowd. I finally caught up with my friends outside the stadium. I never told my Mom. I was just an immature eleven year old and I had no business going to a concert but I had a great time!

That is a good story. I've never had that experience before.
