What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

The pulsating beat of my heart intermingled with the blast from the speakers as The Jacksons stepped onto the stage. I was a child, but my mother had prepared me for the concert as if it was my very own wedding day. We busied ourselves with hair and wardrobe insuring myself that just in case I was whisked onto the stage that I would fit in with the funky clothing and the symmetrical hairstyles.

We took our places with the rest of the fans at the Orange Bowl. Everyone was dancing and rocking to the beat. This was history and I was being made a part of it. I was 6 years old inhaling the music as The Jacksons twisted and turned on the stage. They brought back the classics and the new. Michael was the show stopper and I am honored to say that I was a part of Michael Jackson's last tour with his brothers.

John Denver - just him singing and playing guitar, no band or canned music, and seats just 3 rows from the stage. My "date" had to arrive separately due to his work schedule and he was totally annoyed when he saw that my sister had come, too. The concert was wonderful, so quiet and "intimate", but it turned out to be the end of our relationship. Just as well since I am now married 25 years to a great guy and have 2 terrific kids.

My first concert was in 1976 it was Kiss with their makeup on. I was in 6th grade and I went with my brother Lance. It was the beginning of a good friendship with Lance and of a lot of great concerts.

My first concert was at the Cow Palace and I really didn't know how to conduct myself -- I couldn't understand what was being said on stage but decided to woot loudly anyway and everybody just looked at my like I was nuts (I was 12)

Well my first concert memories involve your very own Jacinta O'Halloran - my big sister!! so i was 14 years old living in a small town in Ireland, i wanted to go to the Big City of Dublin to see Bon Jovi play - my sister went to college there so she was my only chance to go as my mother figured i was 'too young' to go on my own. My best friend Michelle and I headed up to Dublin to be met off the train by my sister and her friend Grainne who did take us to the concert - but then lost us as they got a little too carried away rocking to the music! The concert was GREAT but afterwards we roamed the streets lost in this huge strange city until we were finally spotted by some 'gardai' (cops!) who took us to the local police station where we stayed in a room watching the younger guards playing pool!! Finally at about 6am we were taken to my sisters door step - dont know if she wanted to hug or kill me when she saw me being brought to the door in a police car!! What a great adventure!!

Wow, so far everyone here has been to way more concerts than I have! I finally got to go to my first real concert ever last year with my husband. It was really great. He took me to see the All American Rejects. All the bands were cool and it was fun to have a night out with my husband. Though, the kids were upset because they love that kind of music too, and it was weird that mom and dad went. They forget that mom and dad are only in their early thirties, so we still like cool music too. But now, I am ready for another one.

My first concert was when I was in college. I was invited to see Reba McEntyre and Ricky Van Shelton. We had floor seats! Ricky Van Shelton opened for Reba. We were having a great time! As Ricky was walking from each side of the stage he came back to the middle and stopped. He looked out at the crowd and made eye contact with me! He looked right at me, tipped his cowboy hat and winked at me. My date looked at him then me and asked, "Did you just see that? He winked at YOU!" A few other people we were with saw it to. You would have thought Ricky and I had a thing going on! I just smiled and winked back at Ricky! It was an awesome concert!

My first real concert that I remember was in 1987. I was 11 years old and it was Bon Jovi. Where I live the arena had a room that parents could sit in while their kids were at a concert, so my friends mom stayed there. We thought we were so grown up because we weren't going to have a parent actually with us. We did are hair in the prerequisite 80's rat's nest. We wore our Guess Jean mini skirts. We thought we looked great. We all got matching t-shirts from the concert; the yellow ones with the "Slippery When Wet" road sign on the front. All 4 of us wore them to school the next day. We felt even better when we found out that noone else in our grade got to go to the concert. We were just too cool.
My actual first ever concert was when I was I think 4. My mom took my sister and I to see Eddie Rabbit, but I don't remember it.

I was 14 years old- and I had won a bus trip to a town a few hours away from the tiny hole-in-the-wall town I lived in- to see Van Halen! Godfather's pizza was included for dinner. I took my "cool" uncle, one of the few people my mother would allow me to attend the concert with.
It was. The. Coolest. Thing. Evarrr.
I was so hyped up on adrenaline I did not even feel it when I fell off of the chair I was standing on- I jumped right back up and kept bouncing and singing.
Wish I had that kind of energy now!
