What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

I went to Hall and Oates with my best friend in high school and it was great! They have so many hits.

The first concert I went to was Bob Dylan when I was 14--it was amazing!! Although he barely talked and when he did, I couldn't understand one word. He seemed to have a lot of energy for being 60-odd years..some guy passed out on me too.

How about the first concert I wanted to go to? All my 13yr old friends got to go and see Motley Crue. They still tease me to this day but my father said no! Now being the parent of a ten year old I can understand why, but then it was devastating.

My first concert was John Mellencamp in the 5th grade. My best friend Heather recieved tickets for her birthday and got to take a friend. We planned our outfits for two weeks prior to the show down to the last detail...our matching hats we purchased at a local department store. Then that day her mom took us to the show, we sat in our seats, watched the concert and then went to the parking garge to find the car to go home and her mother had lost her car keys. We had to wait two hours for her father to get through traffic to pick us up but we got home so late our parents let us skip school the next day. That may have been the best part.

It was after my parents divorce and we'd moved back to California from Arizona. I was 9 years old and was in love with Sean Cassidy. My mom surprised me by getting 2 tickets to go see him live. My strongest memory was not quite understanding why all the girls around me kept screaming while he was performing but thought I would join in even though it was kind of silly. The 2nd strongest memory was being amazed I was allowed to stay up so late for the first time and thinking my mom was so incredible for all of it.

Okay, when I was 12, I went to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and saw Hank Williams Jr.

I was in 6th grade and my mom took me to see Rick Springfield on the Working Class Dog tour. We went to TGI Fridays beforehand and I felt very grown up. I believe I was wearing a flightsuit and foldover booties. I remember Rick seemed to take an item of clothing off after each song. Awesome.

I was in the 6th grade and we saw Poison open up for Motley Crue on the "Dr. Feelgood" tour at the AWA in Phoenix, AZ. I went with my best friend and her parents us; lame I know but it was the only way. We had nosebleed seats so the binoculors came in handy. Motley Crue was taking a break half way through the show but the arena went black. You could hear Tommy Lee on the drums but couldn't see him. I spotted him with my binoculars! There was a spotlight shinning on the ceiling and there he was in a monsterous contraption that suspended his drum set in a steel round cage from the ceiling. He was moving in all directions inside the cage while playing. At the end of his performance he stood up in the cage and dropped his gold g-string to moon the crowd only I was on the other side. The very first time I saw a male's anatomy in person, it was Tommy Lee! My husband has heard the story and still teases me about it.

It was 1983 and me and five gal pals headed to Austin’s amazing outdoor concert venue, The Meadows, to hear The Police. It was the Synchronicity Tour. The only thing as big as our love for Sting was the size of our hair. It was an amazing night. Stars in the sky. Stars on the stage. Stars in our eyes. As Sting belted out Tea in the Sahara we swigged Tickle Pink in the grass. Ahh...the memories.
