What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

The giveaway ended June 27th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

Duran Duran April 9, 1984, I was a sophomore in high school & it was in Oklahoma City about 2 hours away. My wonderful parents drove me & a friend (their friend's daughter) all the way to the arena & waited in the car! it was fantastic! I got pix from a guy on my bus, cuz we were too far away. Great memory!

I don't remember the year; but, it was an Alman Brothers concert in Hartford, CT and was in the days of outdoor concerts. I went with Eddie Kaufman.

"Baby, what'd I say?" My older cousins took me to my first concert: Ray Charles at Red Rocks Ampitheatre on a perfect Colorado summer night. I don't remember who opened for him, but he was very late coming on. By the time he sat down at the piano, the rowdy crowd had had lots of time to think, drink and get mad about his tardiness. First one beer can, then another and another hit the stage and exploded. Ray sat there quietly as the reality set in, then he got up and left the stage, never to return. It was many years later when I saw him in a little club outside New Orleans, where he was revered and reveling in it. It was worth the wait!

My first concert was when I was 14 (I won't even begin to tell you how long ago that was but when you hear who it was - you can do the math!). I went with my best friend and neighbor, Kris, to see Journey. Bryan Adams was the opening act at the Tacoma Dome. We waited outside in the August sun of the Northwest (which can be quite warm!) for hours, it seemed, got our concert t's and had a blast. Now that I live in the live music capital of the US (Austin, I'm told has bragging rights) I rarely get out to see concerts, unfortunately. Four kids with my last two being ages three and two, make going out to see such events a rare and costly privelege. But I still have my memories of Steve Perry! What a night.

My first concert was WOODSTOCK- 1969. I was only thirteen years old. didn't have any of the obvious physical signs of puberty yet but was needing some kind of stimulation. either from music, male or both. jumped curfew and headed there. Snuck under a fence and made my way to the front. Loved it. especially when i could feel the sounds reverbated through my body.. HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

The first concert I saw was when I was 13 around 1976-1977. It was for England Dan & John Ford Coley. Our high school won a contest for them to appear at the school. They performed in the high school gym. It was great!

When I was a freshman in Highschool I was dating a guy who was in love with Def Leppard. He took me to a concert in my hometown and we had a blast. I was so in love with him at the time and being there with the music booming around us just made it so much more meaningful. We were two people in a huge crowd, but it still felt like we were alone holding hands and singing along with the songs. Everyone around us was so into the music and dancing and throwing their hands in the air. I remember we were up kind of high, but still had a great view of the band. I can still almost hear the beat and see the drummer rocking out and it's 25 years later! Kind of funny, but after we both went our seperate ways, we got back together about 8 years later and now we're married with 3 kids. I bet the kids can't see us rocking out at a concert!

The very first concert I went to see was The Psychedelic Furs - I don't remember the venue but it was general admission and we were up in the nosebleed section. From up there, I wasn't very impressed with this whole concert-going business and pointed to my date that I wanted to be down there (in the pit at the front of the stage) - so we wiggled our way into that writhing mass and I reached the stage just as Richard Butler reached out his hand and we connected. That was all I needed - I was hooked. And I worked in the music industry for 12 years after that. Best time of my life.

I was about 15 and I went to the Styx - Mr. Roboto concert. It was not only my first concert, but it was my very first date with a boy. He was 16 and totally into rock concerts. We took a bus down to NYC and he was a perfect gentleman. It was in a small venue, but I was still completely enthralled that I was at my first concert. I begged my mom to let me go as she felt I was still too young to be dating and heading into the city with a boy I just met. I got her to agree and even got a new pair of designer jeans - back then Sassoon and Alessio's were the hot ticket. When the lights went dark and the special effects and illuminations happened I was in awe. I had boned up on my Styx prior to the concert and my "new boyfriend" had said that the song Lady was our song. Till this day whenever I hear Lady or any Styx song I think of him and the beautiful memory of my first date.

I was in the third grade and I went to see The Jets at the Sternwheel Regatta in Charleston, W.Va. I remember stopping at the grocery store to buy Doritos before the show because they had some kind of promotion with The Jets. It was a great show, but my parents made me leave early because it was a school night.
