What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

I was 13 in the glorious hard rock year of 1989. Areosmith and Skid Row were playing the Cow Palace in San Francisco, and somehow I convinced my mom to drive me, my best friend, and my sister through the complicated streets of San Francisco (for us, we lived in a small town in Sonoma County!) to the show. I dressed in what I thought was complete rocker gear, tight ripped jeans, black tank top, red flannel shirt and cowboy boots. I teased out my hair and put on thick black eyeliner and bright red lipstick. My mom rolled with all of this, even dancing a bit to Aerosmith, whose blusey-rock was a little easier to like for a 45 year old. Skid Row, on the other hand, was all about screeching guitars, wailing lyrics, and loud drums. She put earplugs in for that part of the show. But I was in heaven! That was just the start of my obessession with going to rock shows...after that usually without my mom! That first show was like a christening of sorts and I never looked backed!
My first concert was a Simon and Garfunkle concert in 1969 in Cleveland, OH. I remember it vividly because it was during the hippie protest era of the late sixties and the year I graduated high school.
I attended a Squirrel Nut Zippers concert. It was so awesome! All the guys were dressed to the nines in Zoot suits and it was cool to watch all the couples Swing dance- I immediately fell in love with that style of music and culture. There is so much energy at a Swing concert- you can't help but get carried along-literally!

I went to see the Beach Boys at the Minnesota State Fair, let's see . . . must have been in 1979. It was a hot & sunny day, the crowd was playing with these huge beach balls. Everyone was singing and swaying to the music. It was so exciting. I told my friend that everyone should experience this then maybe the world would be a nicer place.

It was the early 70s and my parents paid for tickets so some younger neighbors could take me to see The Carpenters. The warm-up was Skyles and Henderson, a comedy duo. During the warm-up, one of them started playing with Karen's drums and broke the snare drum! Pieces of it flew out into the audience. They were funny, though. Seeing Karen and Richard sing all their big hits and some new songs was really great. At 12 or 13, I thought I was hot stuff after attending that concert. It was a positive experience.

My 1st concert was the Janet Jackson Velvet Rope tour in Rochester, NY. I went with a friend of mine and we went for chinese beforehand and then after the concert we went for a walk along the pier at the beach. It was really great and one of the best and sadly only concerts I have ever been to. I even bought a tape of the concert when it came out.

The San Francisco "Day on the Green" summer concert series were fantastic outdoor stadium concerts packed with excited young people and great music. My favorite memories are driving to the concert headlining with Aerosmith and AC/DC in a mustang convertable with my first love. The energy and the music took you to another place that I can relive each time I hear one of their songs.

I remember The Jackson 5 Victory Tour Concert we were so happy to be going because my Mother told me she couldn't afford the tickets I cried like a baby but quickly got over it. The night of the Concert my mom pulled the tickets from behind her back , boy I jumped and screamed my happiness , to this day I still thank my mom for that one.

I was 13 and it was a school night-my best friend and I went to the Vanilla Ice concert. We thought we were THE coolest! I wore my shirt I bought that night until it had holes in it! Ice Ice Baby...
