What Memories Do You Have from Your First Concert?

By: Caitlin Goebel (View Profile)

Let’s take it back to the fifth grade. It’s my best friend’s birthday. The night started out with all of us going over to her house. We did each others make-up, picked out the “perfect” outfits and practiced the lyrics over and over again until we had them memorized. As we walked through the doors of the Rose Garden Arena we felt ten times older than we were. All five of us including her mom stood up a little taller than normal. We took our seats and then the music started “Ohhhhh … I’m just a girl …” the crowd went crazy. The lights, the sound, the audience, lit up and didn’t stop for two hours. We felt like we were on top of the world and all grown up.

Everyone has vivid memories about the first concert they’ve ever gone to. Whether it was Michael Jackson, Eddie Money, or Poison, chime in to tell us the first concert you went to.

The giveaway ended June 27th, but you can still add your story to this chit chat. Look for more giveaways and stand by for an announcement about our winner.

I was 15 in the early 80s, and loved Rush's music and lyrics. But I was a sheltered 15, and had no idea what a concert was like! My then-boyfriend got us tickets andI was thrilled! I dressed in my best, pressed jeans, a plaid blazer and my Add-a-Bead necklace. Needless to say, I was SOOO out of place, and so embarrassed! I also didn't understand why we had seats, when no-one was sitting down. What a clueless girl I was back then! But when the music began, none of the rest of it mattered. It was magic.
I was 15 and went to a Nazareth concert I was sitting in 3rd row and it was so cool! but back then there were alot of drugs going around so I wasn in the middle of smoke, and I guess I got high from the smoke but I went wild standing in my chair and yelling so loud that the next day I couldn't even talk, but is was rad!
I was only nine years old when my grandmother took me to a James Brown concert at the Apollo Theatre. It was the first concert that I ever went to. I did not know what to expect but there was a lot of energy in the building.

My father was working at the University of Rochester (he was head of Men's Sports) and he had me with him because he had left something in his office that he needed. I was only 9 years old at the time and it was a big deal for me to go with him to his office! We had to walk through the campus to get there and all you could hear was MUSIC coming from the Palestra. It was Peter Framptom singing "Show me the Way"! Of course at the time I didn't know who he was, but the music was magic to me, and right then and there a "Rock N' Roll" chick was BORN! I begged my Father to take me to see who was singing. Because of my Dad's job, he knew security, etc. around campus, and I think even he was curious about the concert going on in the Palestra, so he held my hand and we walked over to check it out. Right away my Dad saw "Tiny" Zwetch, a security guard he knews, & Tiny let us in to Palestra. I saw my first concert, Peter Framptom with my Dad and to this day we still talk & giggle about it

First concert, 15 years old(1980something), 38 special and Huey Lewis and the News. Municipal Auditorium, Nashville Tennessee. A friend's mom took us, I remember Van Zant running out to the audience, in the section that we were sitting in, and played a solo on the guitar. It was awesome. Had many more concerts after that. Could tell a story about almost every one. Married a man that loves and plays music. Try to go to as many concerts that budget and work will allow. So thanks to 38 special and Huey Lewis for getting me hooked on music and concerts for life. Can't wait to take the kids when they get older. I believe they will be hooked too.
Way back in the 1950s, when I was about 12, my big sister took me to a rhythm and blues concert. This was in the mostly segregated South so it was a bit unusual for two white kids to be at such a show, but my sister never let a little thing like color get in the way of a good time. I'll always love her for that. I can't remember all of the performers who rocked the house that night, but the star was James Brown and I'll never forget the clapping and shouting that erupted as he threw off his sparkling gold cape and belted out "Please, Please, Please...Baby, please don't go." For weeks afterward, I'd jump around the house doing my best Godfather of Soul imitation.
