Silvia Henriquez: Reproductive Health Care for Latinas

By: Kathleen J. King (View Profile)

Q: Explain how the Latina Advocacy Network (LAN) works.

A: Latinas who are committed to reproductive health care can join or start a Latina advocacy network in the city. These networks become the “reproductive justice” voice for Latinas. They organize events, public education campaigns, and dialogues on reproductive health issues affecting Latinas locally. They also participate in one national campaign organized by NLIRH.

Q: How do you get your message out there and fundraise with so many organizations competing for dollars?

A: Public speaking, writing articles, and a strong staff and board all contribute to organizational growth. We also have been very good at honing our niche in the reproductive health and rights field.

Q: What are some of the ways you organize communities and train future leaders?

A: We have Latinas Organizing for Leadership and Advocacy (LOLA) trainings that we do in different cities around the country. We provide our activists with technical assistance either in person, or via phone. We also provide fact sheets and action kits on NLIRH national campaign and top issues. Activists remain connected via our e-alerts and communication with our Advocacy Associate.
