8. Apply for your state tax-exempt status (you need the IRS determination letter to do this).

9. Apply for a state ID number.

10. Register as a charitable organization (check to see if you are exempt from doing this in your state, if you have less than $25,000 in annual gross revenue, for example).

11. Obtain a business license from the city and/or county government.

While Diamond admits that every year her nonprofit faces challenges, in terms of funding and other obstacles that may arise, she believes those are just steps to reaching her ultimate goal.

“It’s challenging thing because Atlanta’s market is very philanthropic and there’s a lot of competition for the dollars. We believe that what we’re doing is so important,” she says. “I really believe that we are close to finding this test.”
