What a daunting question when you really stop and think about it. What does it mean? How do you know? What areas of our life are we talking about when we ask ourselves if we are living it right? I think about where I’m at and where I’m going. Have I achieved success in the areas that are important to me? Do I even know what those areas are? What is success anyway? That one simple phrase of am I living it right can be so complex and thought provoking.
I first heard this question when I was listening to John Mayer during a time where I was quite certain I wasn’t living it right. I loved that first album that I bought of his (Room for Squares) and pretty much everything he has ever written. I listened to the song “Why Georgia” over and over again. I wonder what it means to him (John Mayer). With all the resources available now via the internet, I’m sure it takes only a click of a button to find out. Personally, I enjoy making up my own meanings to the songs that touch me to my core. That is the greatest thing about music and lyrics. It doesn’t have to mean the same thing to everyone.
Having written several of my own lyrics (not yet shared with the world), I have a much higher appreciation for singer/song writers, especially those whoreally write about their own lives. Wow, what a vulnerable position to be in, and yet somehow exhilarating at the same time to see your life experiences put to words and song.
So am I living it right? Yes! I’m writing creatively and putting myself out there, taking risks, being who I am, sharing my thoughts. I’m paying attention to what matters to me (family, friends, health, and fitness). I’m giving back in ways that communicate my experiences, hopefully allowing others to take away a new perspective or reaffirm old ones. I’m making a positive contribution to society. After several years of deep soul searching, intensive therapy at times, and life shattering ordeals that I’m happy to report did not kill me—I know what living it right means to me. Do you?
