Sarah Palin: More Northern Disclosures

By: Sybil Sage (View Profile)

Has John McCain been heard singing, “Getting to Know You” to Sarah Palin?  Is he starting to look like one of those guys who bought a bride online?  Sure, she’s cute, but what will we find out next?

Even if we agree that the kids should be off-limits, the story of Bristol Palin, the Alaskan governor’s unmarried and pregnant seventeen-year-old daughter, was sure to be made public, as her mother might have anticipated. Reactions vary.  Some feel the mother of an infant with special needs, Trig (the one whose name is Norse for “strength”), and also the mother of a teenager with special needs (the one named after a salmon fishery), might have chosen to turn down the VP job to protect her kids’ privacy and be more available than is possible while on the campaign trail. Others are more sympathetic, perhaps feeling, “That could be me ... struggling with my kids’ problems and running for vice-president, a job I don’t understand, with an older man I met only once.”

Sarah Palin is undeniably colorful and courageous.  I wouldn’t want to be faced with the choices she’s confronted, but, then again, for her it’s not a choice, which may minimize the agonizing.

This is generating a vast amount of opinion, all different. I think it's fortunate and lucky that a high school kid got pregnant, yet finished college and wasn't compromised because of having had that responsibility at such a young age. I'd be terribly upset if my kid, who's now 25, had taken on parenthood at such a young age. The brains of teenagers are not fully formed, which is why insurance companies charge more for them, and there are other reasons I'd not encourage a child to move directly from youth into parenting. Sarah Palin and I have different priorities and values. I'd not deny her the right to make her choices, and wish she'd not impose her beliefs on others.

The prego daughter isn't the issue, Sarah Palin's political stance is. I must admit, she's pretty damn hot lookin', to bad she's two steps away from being a facist.

if obama had the pregnant teenage daughter, the right wing would be all over it. this woman is running on a sanctimonious family values platform, i think it is interesting that she would put her whole life on display this way.

Hmm...would you be asking this if Sarah Palin were a man? I think not. This is 2008, honey, not the 1950's. Unwed teenage pregnancies happen; it's not the end of the world, just the beginning of a new life. Take it from someone whose just-turned-7, light-of-her-life grandson was born the summer before her son's senior year in high school: Babies are a good thing, not a punishment. And they don't ruin your life either; my son and his wife are happily married, college educated, gainfully employed, and the parents of two (soon to be three) marvelous sons. I'm sure Govenor Palin and her family knew what they would be facing before she accepted Senator McCain's invitation to be Vice President. What makes you think you know better than they what they can handle? And, David, Alaska is far more up-to-date than you think. Have you been there lately? I didn't think so. My brother is a college professor up there. Bet you didn't even know they had colleges, huh?

As a parent, I could not knowingly submit my child to the tremendous amount of attention and ridicule that her daughter will now face. If Sarah Palin and her husband did not think it would get as bad as it undoubtedly will, then that only shows how remote and out of touch they really are..perhaps because Alaska is somewhat detached from the rest of our country???
