When I entered the TRU Spa near Chinatown in San Francisco, I knew instantly this wasn't going to be a typical massage. The decor was bright and minimalist, without the florals and frills I'm used to seeing in spa environments. I could tell the design was carefully thought out because every product or extraneous item could be hidden in the wall cabinets or furniture. The women's locker room was a bit cramped but the mounds of brownies and apples made up for it. The 75-minute massage, performed by a muscular man named Scott, provided enough time for a comprehensive full body muscle makeover that left me smiling and relaxed. He used the perfect amount of pressure -- deep, but not so deep that I had to hold my breath. Supposedly, the light therapy (varying colors of light displayed throughout the treatment) is what makes the treatment unique, but I wondered how it really impacted me if my eyes were closed the whole time. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the experience and can see why TRU Spa attracts a young and progressive clientele.
