This is the story of the author’s mother, Doris, one of the “fabulous Harvey girls” from Harvey River, which was settled and named by her paternal grandfather. We learn all of the siblings’ fates, but this is primarily her story. Doris lived an idyllic life, first in Harvey River and then in St. Elizabeth once she was happily married. All of this changed when war broke out in 1939 and she and her family moved to Kingston to start a new life. Doris had no choice but to leave behind her beloved Harvey River and beautiful marital house for tougher times. She went to work at Bellevue before opening her own seamstress business out of her home, and ended up offering advice and assistance to the entire neighborhood out of the sewing room. After her husband’s untimely death from stomach cancer, Doris went on to care for her siblings and children until the end of her life. The rich imagery, history, and dialect of Jamaica are woven through this story. The last words that Doris said to her daughter were, “Don’t forget me.” This warm and loving tribute to her mother proves that she never will, and neither will we.
